Mwakideu defends Marya Okoth over backlash for remarrying 1 year after breakup with YY

Radio personality Alex Mwakideu has come to the defence of influencer Marya Okoth following widespread criticism from a section of the public over her recent marriage, which came a year after her breakup with comedian YY.

Speaking during a radio show on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Mwakideu called out Kenyans for what he termed as unfair judgment and double standards, especially directed at women who choose to move on after the end of a relationship.

Double standards on women moving on

Wakenya wengi wanasema fear women, kwa sababu Marya ameolewa. What is the problem with that? Aliyekuwa mpenzi wa YY. Wakenya wanasema ameolewa within one year,” Mwakideu said, questioning the logic behind the backlash.

He noted that people were judging Marya harshly just because she went through a traditional wedding (ruracio) shortly after her previous relationship ended. “Wakenya wanasema tangu kuachana akaenda kufanya ruracio,” he added.

The presenter also referenced another case that recently emerged online involving the wife of the late footballer Otuoma, who was also criticised for moving on with a new partner.

Another story imecome up. Bibi ya Otuoma amejitokeza na boyfriend mpya na amemove on,” he said.

No timeline for when a woman can move on

Mwakideu argued that the only time such situations might raise legitimate questions is in cases involving the death of a partner.

Kwa mfano Otuoma angeaaga dunia leo halafu after one month mke ya Otuoma aolewe, hapo ningesema ehh hapo kulikua na mahusiano wakati ambapo marehemu Otuoma alikuwa hai,” he explained.

He questioned the societal expectation that women must wait for a certain period before moving on from a relationship, terming it unfair and outdated.

Mpaka najiuliza kuna mtu ako na siku rasmi ya wanawake ku move on? I don’t think it is fair. Let women be, let Marya be. Wacha aoelewe na asherekee harusi yake na bwana yake,” he said.

Mwakideu wrapped up by saying even three months is enough for someone to rebuild their life and make personal decisions, urging people to stop policing women’s choices.

“After 3 months wewe endelea na maisha yako. Get married and move on. Tupatieni duration basi.
