Comedian Mammito Eunice has expressed concern over the growing circulation of fake alcohol in Kenya, saying it has become a major health threat.

In a light-hearted but serious message on Sunday, October 26, 2025, she questioned why Kenyans should be sold counterfeit liquor when wine existed even during the times of Jesus and Moses.

Mammito said the issue of fake alcohol is no laughing matter, pointing out that it is endangering lives across the country.

Methanol poisoning cases

Her remarks come amid rising cases of methanol poisoning and growing concern about the safety of alcoholic drinks sold in local bars and shops.

“Divai alcohol imekuwa hadi wakati wa Yesu na Musa, so mbona tukubali kuuziwa pombe fake!” Mammito said.

She went on to add, “We have so much fake liquor in our stores, and it’s affecting our health, and people are also losing their lives!”

Her comments came shortly after the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) issued a public statement in response to reports of methanol poisoning.

In its message, KEBS assured Kenyans that all methanol in the country is denatured with denatonium benzoate, described as the world’s most bitter chemical, to discourage accidental or intentional consumption.

KEBS further said it continues to enforce strict standards to protect public health and ensure methanol is used only for industrial purposes.

Mammito’s statement reflects growing public frustration as reports of counterfeit alcohol continue to surface in different parts of the country.

Authorities have been carrying out periodic crackdowns on unlicensed manufacturers, but the problem appears to persist, especially in informal outlets.

Adding to the concern, the United Kingdom recently included Kenya on its list of countries where British travellers are advised to be cautious when consuming alcohol.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) cited the risk of methanol poisoning from counterfeit or tainted beverages.

Kenya was among eight countries mentioned, alongside Nigeria, Uganda, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and Russia.

Mammito’s message mixed humour with a warning, using her platform to highlight the serious consequences of fake liquor consumption.

Her comments also echoed the growing call for authorities to tighten regulation and protect citizens from toxic alcoholic products circulating in the market.
