Eric Omondi names abandoned Rongai baby Michael, calls for mother’s return
By Steve Ireri, September 6, 2025Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has reassured the public that the newborn baby found abandoned in Rongai is safe and healthy, while appealing to the child’s mother to come forward.
On Saturday, September 6, 2025, Omondi shared a photo of the infant, wrapped carefully inside a duffel bag and placed near an estate gate in Rongai. The baby was promptly taken into the care of the local police, ensuring immediate safety and protection.
Following the discovery, Omondi took to social media to provide an update on the child, revealing that the baby had been named Michael, describing him as an angel in his post.

He emphasised that the appeal was not to judge the mother but to offer support, underscoring the importance of compassion in such circumstances.
In his post, Omondi appealed directly to the mother, saying the child needed her care and that assistance would be extended to her if she came forward.
“Our son is safe and healthy. We have named him Michael because he is an angel. He is in the safe hands of Child Services. I want to appeal to the mother to please come forth because the boy needs her and we will support her,” Omondi wrote.

Earlier, when the baby was found, he had highlighted that the situation called for understanding and support rather than judgment.
“I am told this baby was abandoned by the mother yesterday in Rongai near an estate gate and is currently with the police. If you are the Mother, please contact me. If you know the Mother, please contact me, tumsaidie…Just from the way that baby has been wrapped says a lot about the Mother, and we will not be quick to judge her,” Omondi said in his appeal.

Abandoned babies
The incident adds to a worrying trend of abandoned babies across the country in recent months.
In August 2025, human rights activist Njeri wa Migwi raised the alarm when a newborn was left outside her Usikimye offices in Kayole, while earlier in February, a baby girl was abandoned at ITARC Hospital in Naivasha due to birth complications.
Similar incidents were reported in Rarieda and Tharaka Nithi last year, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable newborns.
