Controversial gospel singer Christopher Mosioma alias Embarambamba has come clean on the use of suggestive undertones in his latest songs.
Speaking during an interview with Nation, Embarambamba strongly defended himself insisting that he is still a gospel musician in spite of his bizarre antics like mounting the back of cows or anything near him during his performances and sexually-charged lyrics.
Embarambamba’s latest songs; Imesimama, Iny’igwete Ndine, Mama Nariegwa, Yasoire Bono Somora, Napenda Mbele Sipendi Nyuma, have all raised concerns as they are laced with suggestive undertones that do not communicate Christian messages.
“I have seen people criticising me, saying my songs are shameful and immoral. They say my songs are not gospel and that they go against the tenets of Christianity. You know people do not understand songs,” Embarambamba said.
The controversial gospel singer further explained the sexual innuendos in his songs.
“When people hear the words naskia nipande (I feel like climbing), they think it’s that ‘climbing’ used in making love. They do not hear ‘I feel like boarding Jesus’ vehicle’. When they hear imeamka imesimama (it’s up and standing), they think that thing (rising to occasion) is indeed up. They can’t tell that it is the gospel that is ‘up and standing’,” Embarambamba argued.
Interpretation
Embarambamba claimed that his lyrics have gotten him in trouble because people have misguided interpretations.
He cited his latest song about his mother, where he says “mama yangu amekuliwa (my mother has been chewed),” noting that it shouldn’t be interpreted that his mom had sex (slang interpretation) but rather that she had been conned.
Embarambamba claimed his mother was conned by rogue SACCOs and other people.
“Those SACCOs squandered her money. The boda boda riders she sold bread to declined to pay her, while construction workers refused to pay for the githeri she supplied them. She was even attacked by ants. Hunger ate her. When people hear my ‘mum was eaten’, they say that is bad manners and wonder who ate her. They think that she slept with someone,” Embarambamba explained.
Attract audiences
The controversial gospel singer further claimed that his strange antics and suggestive undertones are only meant to attract people.
“You know nowadays; artistes must have unique ways of attracting audiences. People must see something different in you. You must know how to attract people to know your songs. You need to start with a message that is different from other musicians. Then you release the rest of the message later. That is why I am different,” he said.
“You can for example start by saying oihh, aihhh…amenidunga amenidunga (he has injected me, he has injected me), then later say ‘Jesus has injected me with a jab’. If you start by singing that ‘Injili imesimama (the Gospel is strong)’, no one will watch or listen. But when you start with ‘imeamka, mama nimeskia joto joto (it is standing strong, mother I am feeling warm)’, people will be attracted,” he added.
Criticisms
In May 2021, Embarambamba came under intense criticism after a video of him dancing with a woman in a compromising situation went viral.
Reacting to the video, Ringtone stated Embarambamba had never been a true Christian but rather a businessman keen on earning money.
