Coster Ojwang’ reveals his music was never aimed at Luo fans
By Steve Ireri, August 22, 2025Ohangla musician Coster Ojwang’ has reflected on the early stages of his career, revealing that from the very beginning, his music was never specifically aimed at Luo audiences.
Speaking during an interview with the Mic Cheque podcast on Friday, August 22, 2025, Coster revealed that a large proportion of his initial fanbase consisted of non-Luo speakers and that most of the people who attended his shows belonged to other communities.
He explained that nearly every decision he makes today, whether related to his music, style, or performance, has been carefully calculated to appeal to a broader audience, acknowledging that there is always room to make mistakes but taking pride in the fact that he has rarely misjudged his approach over the years.
“With me for the longest time, my music was never Luo. Honestly, a lot of my fans were non-Luo speakers when I started out. Those who used to attend my shows were never Luo people. So a lot of things I do right now were calculated. There is space to get it wrong, but I’m just happy that I have not gotten it wrong many times,” he said.

One of the areas in which Ojwang’ has maintained remarkable consistency is his style and fashion.
He spoke at length also about that, revealing that he has treated it as an integral part of his artistic identity and performance persona.
He insisted that since his very first appearance on the music scene, he has deliberately curated the way he presents himself on stage, ensuring that every outfit communicates a coherent message and reflects his personal brand.
“So one of them is style and fashion. I think I am one of the people in Nairobi who are consistent in how they dress for a performance. Since the first day,” he said.
While the materials and quality of his clothing have evolved to match his growth as an artiste, he revealed that the overall message and consistency of his fashion choices have remained largely unchanged.
Ojwang’ also highlighted the extensive research he undertakes before making wardrobe decisions, examining what has been worn in the past to understand trends, appropriateness, and audience reception.

He revealed that he even pays attention to minor details such as the shape or style of a cap to ensure it complements his overall image.
“Since the first day I appeared, I have maintained the fabric, which has changed, and the quality, but I have maintained it. The message in style has been consistent, and I take a lot of pride in that. Changes to such come with growth, but mine have not changed much. And then the things I wear, I research about them, what people wore back then. If a cap looks funny, why?”
