Barack and Michelle Obama break silence on divorce claims
By Valerian Khakayi, July 16, 2025The former US president Barack Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, have spoken out against rumours that their marriage might be in trouble.
Obama, who had joined Michelle and her brother, Craig Robinson, during their latest episode on their podcast on Wednesday, July 6, 2025, addressed divorce rumours.
The conversation started after Robinson noted that the Obamas are together during the show. In response, Michelle said that whenever they are not seen together in public, people assume they are getting a divorce.
“Because when we are not together, folks think we are divorced,” Michelle said.
The former first lady further said that there had not been a single moment in her marriage when she thought about quitting her husband.
She acknowledged that they had gone through some hard times but also shared that they had enjoyed many fun moments and adventures together, noting that she had become a better person because of the man she married.
“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting on my man, and we have had some really hard times, but we have had to have had a lot of fun times and a lot of adventures. I have become a better person because of the man I am married to,” she added.
Obama on marriage
In his response, the former president said that he often misses such things and does not even know they are happening until someone mentions them to him, adding that he finds himself wondering what they are talking about.
“These are the kinds of things that I just miss, so I do not even know this stuff’s going on, and then somebody will mention it to me and I’m like what are you talking about,” he said.
Divorce rumour
This comes after speculation about their marriage has run rampant after Michelle Obama did not accompany her husband to several high-profile events, including Donald Trump’s inauguration and the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, fuelling speculation that they might be separating.
The Obamas celebrated their 32nd anniversary in October 2024.
