Alex Mwakideu jokingly urges Ruto to reward Harambee Stars fans
By Paulette Mboga, August 11, 2025Radio presenter Alex Mwakideu has made a playful appeal to President William Ruto, asking him to consider rewarding loyal Harambee Stars fans just as he has been rewarding the players.
“Sasa rais Ruto akianza kupeana zile pesa akumbuke wale ambao wanaombea nchi, kuna wale ambao tunashabikia nchi… Aanze pia kufikiria pia out of the pitch kidogo,” he said on a radio show on Monday, August 11, 2025.
The lighthearted request comes after President Ruto announced a lucrative incentive scheme for the national football team during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers—pledging Ksh1 million for every win and Ksh500,000 for every draw.
The move has seen players pocket millions for their performance on the pitch, a gesture that has boosted morale and encouraged competitiveness.
Mwakideu, however, believes that fans—especially those who attend multiple matches—also play a vital role in the team’s success. “Ni sawa, wachezaji wakule zao 42 million lakini sasa rais wangu daktari William, mfuko wake hauishi. Aanze kufikiria,” he joked.
A small token for dedicated supporters
The radio presenter suggested that the president could find a way to appreciate a small group of the most committed fans.
“Mwakideu huwa anawaombea timu. Afikrie vile aaweza faya kitu kidogo asee ehh… atuweke katika mpango hata nusu nus utu. Afikirie ule alikua shabiki kuazia mechi ya kwanza mpaka ya sasa. Laki moja moja hapa na pale,” he said.

He even mentioned specific supporters who have been present at key games. “Wale ambao walikuakwenye game ya DRC, wakakua ya Angola, wakakua ya Morocco. Kumi tu. Hata elfu kumi kumi tu,” he added.
Although the comments were delivered in a joking manner, they underline the significant role fans play in sports. Supporters not only boost the players’ morale but also help create the electric atmosphere that can influence match outcomes.
Whether or not President Ruto acts on the suggestion, Mwakideu’s remarks have added humor to the ongoing conversation about sports rewards, while subtly reminding leaders that the heartbeat of football lies not only on the pitch but also in the stands.
Harambee Stars have been consistent in their performances, reigniting national pride.
