Tax officials have on Wednesday seized three vehicles at the Mombasa port over tax evasion.

Customs officials said the vehicles were declared as household goods and personal effects.

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner for Customs and Border Control Kevin Safari announced the incident on his Twitter handle.

“A consignment of suspected concealed vehicles was nabbed at the port of Mombasa. The consignment was declared as household goods and personal effects,” said Mr Safari.

Mr Safari said one suspect has been arrested.

The vehicles appear to be top-of-the-range based on the image shared on Twitter by the KRA Commissioner.

In 2016, KRA deregistered 121 vehicles that were smuggled into the country and no duty was paid. KRA said the owners acquired the registration fraudulently.

Mr Safari was put at the helm of customs and border control by the KRA board earlier this year to step trafficking of counterfeit, contraband and smuggled goods through Kenya’s porous borders.

The economy is said to be losing billions of shillings every year through misdeclared goods or undervaluation of imports at the Mombasa port and Kenya’s airports.
