Kenyans have ranked Generation Z (Gen Zs) as their top heroes in a new survey released by Infotrak on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
The survey highlights the impact of Gen Z’s activism, particularly their role in challenging the government on pressing issues.
According to the survey, 23 per cent of Kenyans selected Gen Zs as their heroes, pushing seasoned political figures like Raila Odinga, who garnered 18 per cent, into second place. World record holder in athletics Faith Kipyegon, fresh off an exceptional season, was ranked third with 11 per cent of the votes.
President William Ruto, the recently impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino all tied at eight per cent of the vote. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta secured seven per cent, while Kalonzo Musyoka got five per cent, Morara Kebaso, Eliud Kipchoge, and Fred Matiang’i tied at three per cent.
The surge in support for Gen Zs comes after their bold activism in opposition to the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which had sparked nationwide protests. Their efforts, both online and in the streets, played a significant role in the bill’s eventual withdrawal. Their activism also resulted in a major political shake-up, with President William Ruto dissolving his cabinet and appointing a new, more inclusive team.
Kipyegon’s golden year
Faith Kipyegon, who ranked third in the poll, has had an extraordinary 2024 season, cementing her legacy as one of Kenya’s greatest athletes. She made history as the first woman ever to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 1,500 metres, a feat she achieved at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Additionally, Kipyegon shattered the world record for the women’s 1,500 meters during the Paris Diamond League on July 7, 2024. She clocked an impressive 3:49.04, slicing 0.07 seconds off her previous record set in Florence in June 2023.
Her achievements have earned her a nomination for the prestigious 2024 Track Athlete of the Year award, where she is one of three Kenyan athletes in the running.
Finally, political activist Morara, known for his exposes on stalled projects and government inefficiencies, only received 3% in the poll, despite his influence.
