KMA condemns intimidation of physicians providing free emergency medical services to protesters

The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) condemns the intimidation and professional sabotage directed at physicians providing free emergency medical services to the anti-Finance Bill protesters.

In a letter dated June 23, 2024, KMA says by demonstrating their commitment to citizens, the physicians fulfilled their oath to provide care for all.

Commending the young physicians, KMA called for the protection of the selfless doctors adding that the association stands firmly with self-doctors.

“The Kenya Medical Association strongly condemns any form of intimidation or professional sabotage directed at physicians providing free emergency medical services. They demonstrated their commitment to citizens and fulfilled their oath to provide care for all,”KMA letter reads.

“KMA stands firmly with our young doctors and calls for protection for our members, We extend our deep appreciation to over 4,000 young, unemployed doctors who bravely took to the streets countrywide to provide emergency medical services during the ‘Rejectfinancebill2024’ demonstrations held on 20th June 2024.”

KMA  urged stakeholders to support the noble course of the young doctors.

“We urge all stakeholders, including employers and the public, to support the selfless contribution of young doctors,” KMA said.

KMA also appreciated the contribution of individuals in organising, mobilising and ensuring timely medical services for injured protesters.

Further, we acknowledge the contributions of all stakeholders, including individuals, businesses, religious institutions, and the public, for organizing and mobilizing resources to ensure timely medical services for injured protesters.

Physician’s protection law

KMA further disclosed that the International Human Rights Laws Protecting Physician’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) outlines the fundamental rights of physicians to practice medicine without fear of arbitrary arrest or interference, ensuring their safety and ability to fulfil their professional duties.

“International Human Rights Laws Protecting Physicians Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR),  underscore the fundamental rights of physicians to practice medicine without fear of arbitrary arrest or interference, ensuring their safety and ability to fulfil their professional duties,” KMA disclosed.

According to KMA, the  UDHR laws that protect the physicians are as follows;

“Article 3: Right to life, liberty, and security of person. Article 9: No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention, or exile. International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Article 9: Right to liberty and security of person; prohibition of arbitrary arrest and detention, “KMA letter reads.

“Article 14: Right to a fair trial and presumption of innocence.International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) Article 12: Right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.”
