The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued an alert in Nairobi warning its citizens to remain vigilant and aware of circumstances amid the ongoing demonstrations in the city over the contentious Finance Bill 2024.

In a notice shared via their official website on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the embassy through Ambassador Meg Whitman urged their citizens to avoid large gatherings and review their personal security plans as a precaution.

“There is a planned protest about the Finance Bill of 2024 in the area of the Parliament of Kenya in the Central Business District beginning at 12:00 pm. Organizers have stated that the events are intended to be peaceful. However, large public gatherings can turn violent at any moment.

“It is recommended to remain vigilant and aware of circumstances and avoid large gatherings. Traffic disruptions are expected,” the notice reads in parts

The embassy also asked its citizens to keep a low profile, avoid crowds, notify friends and family of their safety, and carry proper Identification including a U.S. passport with a current Kenyan visa.

American nationals have also been asked to avoid protest areas and demonstrations, stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/foreigners, have travel documents up to date and easily accessible and remain aware of their surroundings.

The citizens have also been asked to have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance and monitor local media for updates.

The embassy also shared contact details that American nationals may use to contact them whenever they need assistance.

The protests in Nairobi over the controversial bill have hit a fever pitch across Nairobi.

Citizens have protested against the bill saying it was an additional burden to those struggling to survive lean times.
