The Kenya Power and Lighting Company will send customers two codes and instructions in a new campaign to update prepaid (token) metres.
On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, during the launch of the ‘update meter yako ‘ campaign, the company announced that all its customers on prepaid meters will be required to update their meters to enable them to continue enjoying access to electricity.
The campaign, which targets a total of 7.4 million prepaid meters, is set to end on August 2024 and all the prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the tokens.
“A total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are targeted for this exercise. All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the tokens after the deadline date,” Kenya Power’s Managing Director & CEO Joseph Siror said.
“The company has set the end of August 2024 as the deadline for the update of all prepaid meters within the network in Kenya, because of this, we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure that all our customers are fully empowered and assisted in updating their meters to continue to enjoy our services.”
During the launch, Siror stated that the meter update is part of the ongoing global exercise that targets all prepaid meters to use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).
“The update is part of an ongoing global exercise that targets all prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS)- a universal method to transfer tokens to prepaid meters while ensuring the security of generated tokens,” Siror said.
How to update
Siror stated that all prepaid customers will receive two codes from the company when they purchase tokens and they will be required to key the codes to their meter before loading the new token.
Additionally, the company will send codes directly to customers who haven’t purchased tokens to notify them of the meter update.
“Customers will receive two codes from Kenya Power when they purchase tokens they will be required to key the codes to their meter following the steps indicated in the SMS before loading the new token,” Siror stated.
“In other instances, the Company will send the codes directly to the customers who haven’t purchased tokens to notify them to update their meters. The process is simple and free.”
According to Siror, the update will not impact existing tokens that are already loaded into the meter. However, customers are advised to load any previously purchased tokens before updating their meters as failure to do so will render them invalid.
