Three KCSE candidates who were expelled from Moi Girls’ High School in Eldoret, and consequently forced to put up in commercial accommodation facilities throughout the exam period, have been readmitted to the school.
Uasin Gishu County Director of Education, Gitonga Mbaka, intervened, and ordered that the girls, who were staying in lodgings in Eldoret, be readmitted to the learning centre so that they can sit the national test uninterrupted.
Josephat Gachohi, the owner of the lodging facility that the girls were staying in, said he was grateful that the Government intervened before the teenagers “suffered damaging mental anguish”.
“Schools should not be barring children from staying within the school compound, even if those children are suspected to have engaged in wrongs worth suspension,” Gachohi told K24 Digital.
The three Moi-Eldoret students — all aged 17 — are facing disciplinary action.
K24 Digital understands that one of the teenagers was allegedly forced out for bullying a prefect, the other allegedly had bhang in school, and the third was reportedly found in possession of a kitchen knife in school.
The girls’ parents, however, claimed the school did not follow due procedure in expelling their daughters.
“Our girls are now forced to put up in lodgings throughout the one-month exam period,” one of the parents told K24 Digital on Tuesday, November 5.
“We now fear that, given the conditions our daughters are studying under, they will, most likely, perform poorly. Honestly, they are traumatised and humiliated,” said another parent.
The three girls, who hail from Meru, Kisumu and Eldoret, until Tuesday evening, had stayed in a lodging facility in Eldoret for one week.
Moi Girls’ High School principal, Christine Chumba, declined to comment on the matter.
In many boarding schools across Kenya, it is near-normal for expelled students to be barred from sitting KCSE exam while staying within the school compound.
