Woman gives birth during Sifuna’s speech in Bungoma
By Ascah Mwango, July 14, 2025A women’s empowerment event in Bungoma on Sunday, July 14, 2025, took an unexpected turn when a woman gave birth just as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was delivering his speech.
The crowd, in surprise, shouted together: “Mama amejifungua!” (A woman has delivered!). Senator Sifuna paused and looked concerned, asking, “Nani huyo?” (Who is that?).
Without hesitation, he instructed that she be taken to the hospital immediately.
“Apelekwe hospitali, sindio? Nani ako na yeye? Mheshimiwa ametuma gari apelekwe hospitali,” he said, as a vehicle was offered to take her for medical care.
The senator went a step further and announced that they would leave money for the baby’s diapers for the week.
“Na tutawacha pesa ya diaper ya mtoto ya wiki mzima,” he said.
Moved by the situation, the crowd also called out for support for the mother herself. Sifuna reached into his pocket.
“Ya mama, ndo hii shillingi 20,000,” as he handed over Ksh 20,000 on the spot.
Bus incident
Just a few days ago, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, another woman gave birth while on board an ENA Coach bus from Nairobi to Sori in Migori County.
According to a statement from the bus company, the woman went into labour during the evening journey. With the help of the bus crew and fellow passengers, she delivered safely on board the bus.
“This evening, a healthy baby was safely delivered aboard our Nairobi–Sori bound bus, KDK 036U. We are immensely proud of our staff and fellow passengers who stepped up with care and compassion during this remarkable experience,” ENA Coach said.
They gave the newborn a nickname, Baby 036U, after the bus registration number.
“Remarkably, this joyful event comes just under two months after we welcomed Baby 035U on one of our buses. From all of us here, congratulations to the proud mother and her family.”
