Willis Otieno: This regime is the greatest threat to Kenya’s survival

By , August 6, 2025

Lawyer and political commentator Willis Otieno has unleashed a fierce attack on President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of being dangerously incompetent and a threat to the future of the country.

In a strongly worded statement shared via his X account on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Otieno painted a grim picture of the current government, warning that its continued leadership could lead to the complete erosion of the republic.

Otieno argued that while Kenya has endured corrupt and dishonest regimes in the past, what the country is experiencing under the current administration is unprecedented in its level of impunity and moral decay. He claimed that the government’s actions are not only guided by greed but also by a blatant disregard for accountability and the public interest.

Unlike previous administrations, which he noted had their share of flaws, Otieno said the current leadership exhibits a unique combination of arrogance and predatory behaviour that poses a direct threat to Kenya’s democratic institutions, national unity, and economic stability.

“This administration is not just incompetent, it is an existential threat to Kenya’s very foundation. Give it another term and it will decimate what is left of this republic,” Otieno said.

Adding;

“Yes, we’ve had corrupt presidents. Yes, we’ve survived dishonest governments. But we have never faced anything as shameless, greedy, and unapologetically predatory as what we are living through now. My heart bleeds for our nation.”

Mocks Ruto

This comes shortly after he lambasted President Ruto for likening himself to past presidents, calling the comparison delusional and laughable.

In a post on X dated Monday, August 4, 2025, Otieno mocked Ruto’s attempt to link his leadership to that of Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta, saying the president was cherry-picking traits he doesn’t embody.

He dismissed Ruto’s reference to Jomo’s courage, Moi’s wisdom, Kibaki’s intellect, and Uhuru’s development agenda, arguing the current regime is more about empty slogans and contradictions than real leadership.

“This guy woke up, looked in the mirror, and decided to cosplay as all former presidents yet managed to miss what made each of them effective,” Otieno quipped.

“Jomo’s courage?” Bro, Jomo silenced dissent with detentions and an iron fist; you’re out here silencing dissent with influencers and prayer rallies. “Moi’s wisdom?” Wisdom? The man ran Kenya like a village baraza, yes, but at least he remembered names and didn’t read speeches like a student caught cheating,” the statement read.
