Expect light to moderate rainfall in most parts of the country – weatherman

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory predicting light to moderate rainfall across various parts of the country over the next 24 hours.

The forecasted showers are expected in parts of Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Central Kenya, Nairobi, and sections of Northeastern and Southeastern Lowlands.

The advisory also specified that the anticipated precipitation may come with isolated storms and heavier downpours, particularly in some areas where rainfall could exceed 20mm within 24 hours.

“Light to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Central Kenya, Nairobi, parts of NE and South Eastern Lowlands. Isolated storms and heavy rainfall (>20mm in 24hrs),” the weatherman announced.

Rainfall

On Monday, November 11, 2024, the meteorological department reported that the prevailing weather conditions would last through November 18, 2024. The weather advisory detailed that showers would vary by time of day in different regions, occurring in the morning, afternoon, or evening.

“Rainfall is expected to continue over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Southeastern lowlands, the Coast, and northeastern Kenya,” the weatherman stated noting that some isolated areas potentially experiencing heavy rainfall events.

The general forecast indicated that morning rains would affect certain areas, while afternoon and evening showers could be expected in a few locations, occasionally expanding to broader areas in the highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi.

For the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and other Rift Valley counties—such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot—rainfall is anticipated each day throughout the week. In these regions, showers are expected mainly in the afternoons and evenings, although some areas may remain partly cloudy due to the rain’s effects.

The coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River are also forecasted to receive scattered showers, with daytime temperatures in these areas rising as high as 34 degrees Celsius.

Inland regions, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and interior parts of Tana River, are also likely to experience rainfall.
