Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, appeared to downplay Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s prospects in the 2027 presidential race.
Through a post on X reacting to a user who suggested Kalonzo could emerge as the opposition’s flagbearer, Kaluma made his stance clear, saying he would not support any leader linked with Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua.
“We will NEVER vote for anyone associating with Gachagua,” Kaluma posted.

Gachagua’s new bid
Kaluma’s post followed Rigathi Gachagua’s dramatic return from the United States, which was marked by both celebration and tension.
His motorcade was stoned in parts of Mt Kenya during what was billed as a symbolic homecoming tour across Murang’a, Kiambu, and Nyeri counties.
During these rallies, Gachagua announced that he would run for the presidency on the DCP ticket.

He also sought forgiveness from the region’s voters for what he termed past political mistakes, pledging to mount a stronger campaign heading into 2027.
Observers note that Gachagua’s renewed political energy has reshaped conversations in opposition circles, creating speculation about potential alliances and realignments.

Shifting landscape
Kaluma’s remarks add to those conversations, reflecting unease within some quarters about the direction the opposition might take.
While his comments directly referenced Gachagua, they also indirectly touched on Kalonzo, whose position in the opposition remains closely watched.

All the same, the ODM-allied lawmaker has lately turned himself to be a number one defender of President William Ruto, ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga and the broad-based government alongside others.
Likewise, he has not been forgiving to anyone who appears to be a possible threat to both Raila and Ruto in whichever means, and Gachagua has been a prime example.
