Thursday blackout to affect parts of 7 counties

Kenya Power has announced a planned power outage that will affect parts of seven counties on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the utility company said the interruption will run for several hours in the affected areas as part of routine network maintenance.

In Nairobi County, the blackout will affect parts of Westlands, including General Mathenge, Peponi Road, Peponi Gardens, Spring Valley Road, Peponi Cliff, Donyo Sabuk, Pine Wood Apartments, part of Eldama Ravine Road and surrounding areas. The outage will run from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.

In Kisumu County, areas around Sondu will be affected between 8.30 am and 5.00 pm. The blackout will cover Kandaria, Ingutsi Primary, Ingutsi Centre, Ngege Primary, Maraboi Water, Chabera and nearby customers.

In Tharaka Nithi County, the outage will hit Igambangombe and Ntumbara areas, including Kamatanka Market, Mpangua Village, Igambangombe and Kamaindi Market. The power will be off from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm.

Murang’a County will also experience the blackout, with Gatanga among the affected areas. The outage will affect Githingiri Estate, Thika Green Estate, Mugumo, Farm Mugumo Police, Carton Manufacturer, Bahati Farm, Jowaki Estate, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute Thika, Memorial Hospital and nearby areas between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.

In Meru County, large sections will go without electricity from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. The affected areas include Kiirua, Ntugi and Gitoro. Institutions such as Meru National Polytechnic, Consolata Mission Hospital Gitoro, Kiirua Mission Hospital, Meru Technical Training Institute, and hotels like Three Steers and Elsa Hotel are among those expected to be affected, alongside markets, schools, and residential estates in the region.

Parts of Kiambu County will also be impacted. Ndumboini and Uthiru will have no electricity from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, affecting areas such as Ndumboini Market, University of Nairobi Kabete Veterinary School, Uthiru 87, Uthiru Girls, Njathaini and Kanyariri Market. The same hours will apply to areas along Juja and Mangu Road, including Mungetho, Mirimaini, Kiaora Farm, Kariki Farm, Gachibi Farm, Mangu, Igegania, St Francis Mangu Girls, Maryhill Girls and surrounding areas.

In the Coast region, residents of Marafa and Sabaki in Kilifi County will also be affected. Areas such as Mambrui Town, Marafa, Garashi, Wakala, Karibuni Villas, Beach Bay, Mwembe Resort, Savannah, Mijikenda Residence, Angels Bay, Sabaki and nearby customers will be without power from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
