Tea Development Agency confirms night fire incident at Murang’a factory

The Kenya Tea Development Agency Management Services (KTDA MS) has confirmed a fire incident at Ngere Tea Factory in Gatanga, Murang’a County, that occurred on the night of Monday, September 1, 2025.

According to KTDA, preliminary assessments indicate the blaze originated near the factory’s sorting area.

In a statement released on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, KTDA assured farmers and stakeholders that no injuries or fatalities were reported, and the agency assured farmers and stakeholders that the factory remains operational.

The fire prompted concern among tea farmers about potential disruptions to tea processing and delivery, given the factory’s critical role in the region’s tea industry.

Swift response credited


According to KTDA, the fire was promptly contained through the swift action of first responders from the Ngere area, working alongside the Murang’a County and Thika fire brigades.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to them for their timely intervention, which ensured the situation was quickly brought under control,” the agency said.

KTDA emphasised that despite the incident, operations at the factory continue as normal, and the processing of tea leaves has not been interrupted.

The agency’s statement sought to reassure farmers that their produce would still be handled without delay.


KTDA said its technical team is now assessing the root cause of the fire and evaluating the extent of the damage caused.

“Our technical team is assessing the root cause of the fire and the extent of the damage caused,” the statement read, adding that regular updates will be provided as restoration efforts continue.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata also addressed the incident, saying, Ngere Tea Factory in Gatanga is on fire. We have dispatched fire engines. We pray for the best,” highlighting the county’s commitment to supporting first responders and safeguarding the region’s critical tea industry.

The agency also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding farmers’ interests. “KTDA MS is committed to ensuring that farmers’ interests are safeguarded. We shall continue providing regular updates as we progress towards full restoration,” it said.

Following the incident, KTDA stated that Ngere Tea Factory remains operational, with tea processing continuing without disruption.

“We wish to inform our farmers and stakeholders that the factory remains operational. ” The agency noted in its official release.
