Sudi revealed that he was the brainchild behind the handshake between the ODM leader, Raila, and President Ruto, which gave birth to the broad-based government.
“After casting my vote in 2022, I travelled to Nairobi, where I called Mzee (Raila) and assured him that no matter the outcome of the election, we would still be together. If you doubt me, ask the current president, William Ruto. I connected the two through the phone before the conclusion of the tallying process at Bomas,” Sudi said.
He revealed that he also visited Raila’s home several times before President Ruto was sworn in as president.
“I remember I visited his home one morning, and I found many ODM supporters and leaders who were wondering what I was doing there. So besides politics, Raila was my close friend,” said the Kapseret MP, who described Raila as a man who valued his family.

Sudi, however, clarified that he was not alone in the effort but worked alongside others committed to ensuring the unity and stability of the nation.
“The nation has a lot to learn from Raila’s calmness and reflective nature. His rare ability to pause, consider the consequences of his actions, and sometimes step back for the sake of peace will be missed,” said Sudi during a press conference at his Kapseret home.
He praised Raila for consistently putting the interests of the country before his own ambitions and for working harmoniously with his presidential competitors in pursuit of national unity.
In addition, Sudi eulogised the ODM leader, describing him as a father and personal friend. “As a country, we have lost a statesman, but for me, I’ve lost a father. The news of his death hit me hard,” said Sudi.
He said the late Raila is the brainchild of many reforms being enjoyed in the country at the moment. As part of the celebrations to eulogise the fallen leader.
Sudi said there are a lot of things Kenyans can learn from the fallen opposition leader, noting that he was a democratic leader who always accepted defeat.
“Raila came very close to the presidency. When Kenya was almost burning, he put his personal interests aside and agreed to work with three elected presidents to avoid bloodshed in the country,” Sudi said.
