The traffic court in Nairobi has played a clip showing how the daughter of the Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua was killed through reckless driving by a city bus driver.

Milimani Law Courts’ Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu who watched the CCTV footage was told by the investigating officer that Patrick Macharia Magu the matatu driver recklessly reversed the Isuzu minibus between Tom Mboya street and Maragua lane junction and crashed the late Nelly Waithera.

Police Constable Peter Ndirangu from the Central Police Station, Nairobi took the court through the CCTV footage of the accident.

“The City Shuttle bus driver is seen reversing the public service vehicle without due care,” PC Ndirangu pointed to the vehicle as it was captured by the CCTV cameras mounted on the road at the scene of the accident.

The CCTV footage clearly placed the accused Patrick Macharia Magu at the scene of the accident.

The witness produced other documents that corroborate his testimony in the case of causing death through dangerous driving.

“The victim of the accident was sandwiched between the two PSV vehicles KBR 065B (driven by Magu) and KBL 744L which was stationary,” Ndirangu testified.

He said that Magu is the one who was reversing without caring about other road users adding that Magu, on realising his mistake, abandoned the minibus at the scene and fled.

Magu has however denied causing the death of Nelly Waithera on June 17, 2021, and was released on bond.

The 25-year-old Nelly Waithera sustained serious injuries and succumbed on her way to Kenyatta National Hospital.
