Sifuna calls for compensation of victims who died during Raila Odinga’s body viewing
By Nancy Marende, October 28, 2025Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has called for justice and compensation for victims who lost their lives or were injured during the public viewing of the late former prime minister Raila Odinga’s body at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo Stadium.
In a statement to the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Sifuna requested a comprehensive report detailing the circumstances that led to the tragic incidents during the two-day national mourning period.

He asked the committee to determine the exact number of fatalities and injuries, including a clear breakdown of the causes of death in each case.
The senator emphasised that if police bullets caused any of the deaths, the authorities must disclose the progress of investigations and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted without delay.
“Where police bullets were the cause, the Committee should provide an update on investigations to establish culpability for immediate prosecution,” Sifuna demanded.
The Nairobi senator further urged the government to ensure that the families of those who died and those injured receive appropriate compensation.
“The committee should address secondly, the measures in place to ensure that compensation for deaths and injuries from the two consecutive days will be extended to the families of the departed.”
Deaths
This comes a few days after a postmortem report revealed that the three people who died at the Moi International Kasarani Stadium during the viewing of the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga were shot in the chest and head.
The three were shot in chaos that broke out as security teams tried to stop a mob from accessing a VIP section area where the body was being prepared for public viewing on October 16, 2025.

This was the day after Odinga’s death in India. Police also lobbed teargas canisters at the crowd as part of efforts to disperse them.
At least two others died at the Nyayo Stadium in a stampede. More than 300 people were injured in the chaos.
Government Pathologist Bernard Midia conducted the exercise at the City Mortuary in Nairobi.
There were five bodies at the mortuary from the chaos witnessed at the Kasarani Stadium and Nyayo Stadium.
Three were killed at Kasarani and two at Nyayo Stadium. “There were three males and two females, young adults. On two of them, we have found penetrating gunshot wounds to the head, with severe damage to the brain.”
“A third victim had a gunshot wound that penetrated through the chest and abdomen, causing tendon injuries to both chest and abdominal organs. The fourth victim, from Nyayo Stadium, died from what we call ‘fixed here’—a condition consistent with suffocation,” Midia said.
