Scores of Kenyan students who were stranded in Sudan for four months due to COVID-19 restrictions jetted back into the country.

The Kenya Airways plane carrying the 129 students landed at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa on Saturday at 7.45 pm.

Speaking after their arrival, the students said they were living in a deplorable conditing having had trouble getting decent meals and access to health care services.

They expressed gratitude to the various leaders who responded to their plight and helped them buy air tickets to travel home.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nasir and Lamu East MP Shariff Athman came to the rescue of the students after a video highlighting their plight went viral a few weeks ago.

Many of the students come from Coastal counties Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu while others are from Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera and Nairobi.

Mombasa County Chief Officer for Health, Dr. Khadijah Shikely, said that the students will be taken for 14-day quarantine at the Kenya School of Government where they will be tested for COVID-19.

Dr. Shikely said that the students will be released back to their families after they complete their quarantine.
