Salasya threatens to move censure motion if Wetang’ula attends govt’s empowerment programme
By Valerian Khakayi, August 20, 2025Mumis East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has issued a stern warning to the National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, saying he will move a censure motion against him if he attends any government-led economic empowerment programme.
Salasya, in a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, stated that such participation would signal Wetang’ula’s continued involvement in politics while holding the Speaker’s position.
“I dare Wetangula to attend any political meeting of economic empowerment of Kenya Kwanza. I will myself censure a motion for his removal from speakership so that he can proceed with politics and leave the speaker position to someone who will bring back sanity to the National Assembly,” Salasya said.

The vocal MP further emphasised that the National Assembly cannot have a speaker who serves the interests of the executive.
Salasya also revealed plans to hire a lawyer to draft the necessary documents that he will use to table the motion.
“We can’t have a speaker whose interest is to serve the executive. I will hire a lawyer more powerful than Mutuse to draft me those allegations. I’m waiting to see him in a political rally this weekend, tuone mara hii,” he added.

Salasya on Wetang’ula’s leadership
Notably, the vocal MP has also called on legislators to initiate a motion to censure Wetangula, accusing him of bias, intimidation, and acting as an “agent of the Executive.”
Salasya questioned the Speaker’s neutrality, arguing that Wetang’ula has on several occasions shielded government business from scrutiny while frustrating the will of MPs.
He cited the Speaker’s handling of the controversial privatisation bill concerning the Kenya Pipeline Company, claiming Wetangula used “technicalities” to prevent MPs from voting it down.
“We need to start to discuss the conduct of the speaker of the national assembly, whether he is a neutral referee or an agent of the executive. I urge members of parliament to censure a motion to discuss Speaker Wetangula,” he stated.

“How can a speaker use technicalities to evade members from shooting down the privatisation bill of the Kenya pipeline, and a speaker who is involved in executive activities of hoodwinking Kenyans through the lies of women’s economic empowerment?”
Additionally, he accused the Speaker of intimidating MPs, alleging that Wetangula once mocked him as a “TikToker” on the floor of the House
“And a speaker who intimidates members like Salasya as a TikToker on the floor of the house. Wetangula must apologise ama tuanguke na yeye,” he added.
This comes after Wetang’ula criticised him for failing to attend parliamentary sittings regularly.
