Safaricom hails Raila Odinga as a selfless hero ahead of burial
By Nelson Mutwiri, October 19, 2025Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa has mourned the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a selfless leader who made immense sacrifices in the fight for democracy and human rights in Kenya.
Speaking in Meru County during a graduation ceremony at the Meru University of Science and Technology on Friday, October 17, 2025, Ndegwa said Raila will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to justice, freedom, and equality for all Kenyans.

“Raila Odinga stood tall in defending human rights and promoting democracy. His life reminds us that leadership is about service and sacrifice,” the Safaricom CEO stated.
Emulate Raila’s virtues
He further urged the graduating students to emulate the virtues of integrity, courage, and advocacy for societal good as they transition into various sectors of the economy.

Meru University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, echoed Ndegwa’s sentiments, calling on the graduates to uphold honesty and responsibility in their professional journeys, noting that integrity remains the foundation of true leadership.

As the nation prepares to lay Raila Odinga to rest, Ndegwa’s message adds to the chorus of tributes pouring in from across the country honouring a man many describe as the heartbeat of Kenya’s democratic struggle.
Final programme
Raila Odinga will be laid to rest at his family home in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, Bondo, following a night vigil at Opoda Farm.
The funeral ceremony is expected to start from 9 am to 1 pm on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

“Tomorrow, the final interment ceremony will take place, starting with an interment service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University from 9.00 am until 1.00 pm, followed by committal, final prayers and military honours at the gravesite at Kango Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County,” Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced.
Ahead of the burial, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has also assured the nation that the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) ground, where the state funeral is expected to take place, is fully prepared.
