By , October 15, 2025

President William Ruto has visited the Karen home of the late opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga following the announcement of his death in India.

On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the Head of State arrived at the Odinga residence in Nairobi to console the bereaved family.

Elsewhere, thousands of Kisumu residents took to the streets to mourn the ODM leader.

He was received by Mama Ida Odinga, who was accompanied by her daughters Rosemary and Winnie. The President was seen comforting the widow and family members during the emotional visit.

Ruto was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and several ODM leaders, including Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and other senior figures from both government and opposition were also present.

The mood at the residence was sombre. Many leaders stood quietly, hands on their heads, while others sat in silence, visibly struggling to come to terms with the loss.

In one striking scene captured by the media, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga was seen breaking down in tears, her emotions overcoming her as Kindiki tried to console her.

The moment painted a picture of the collective grief that gripped the nation’s leadership.

The visit carried deep symbolism. The President, who was once Raila’s fiercest political rival, stood by the family of the man who later became his partner in government through their 2025 political agreement.

A nation reflects

Raila, 80, died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Kochi, India, after suffering complications. His death has plunged the nation into mourning, with condolence messages streaming in from across the country and abroad.

Ruto’s visit signified unity in grief and respect for a man whose political journey defined Kenya’s history.

Raila’s passing marks the end of an era. From opposition benches to the corridors of power, his influence spanned generations.

The nation now pauses to remember a man who shaped Kenya’s democracy and whose final chapter united even his oldest rivals.
