Ruto: Kenya can achieve South Korea’s success with planning
By William Muthama, August 30, 2025President William Ruto has said Kenya has the potential to match the economic and social progress of countries like South Korea and Malaysia, but only if the nation unites, embraces strategic planning, and fights corruption decisively.
Speaking during the installation of Bishop John Arap Lelei in Kapsabet, Nandi County, on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Ruto urged Kenyans to eliminate political, ethnic, and religious divisions that he said have hindered the country’s development over the years.
“Malaysia, South Korea were where we were 60 years ago. They made the right decisions and are now first-world nations. China transformed in 30 years, lifting hundreds of millions out of poverty. I want to tell the people of Kenya: we can change this country in our lifetime if we work together,” he said.
Unity and planning
The head of state emphasised that national transformation necessitates a collective effort and a shared vision. He encouraged all sectors, including the church, private sector, and government, to unite in pursuing Kenya’s development agenda.
“We must stop politics that harms us. We must end corruption at all levels. There is no title, office, or region that excuses stealing from the public or the sick. Together, we can take Kenya into the future,” Ruto said.
He called on Kenyans to reject negativity and naysayers who doubt the country’s potential.
“God is going to shame those who are against Kenya. This country is going to be greater than what it is today. I am confident. I believe in the greatness of this nation,” he added.

Highlighting corruption as the main barrier to national development, Ruto emphasised the importance of ethical leadership.
He urged citizens and officials alike to uphold honesty, particularly in sensitive areas such as healthcare and public resources.
Ruto also reassured support for the new bishop of Kapsabet Diocese, acknowledging his long-standing relationship with the community and vowing cooperation in the church’s development initiatives.
