Deputy President (DP) William Ruto says that he is not afraid of the so-called ‘Deep State’, a shadowy group that allegedly controls and influences key decisions in the country, including outcomes of elections.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 11, DP Ruto said that he will ensure that voters’ ballots will count in the next election.

“We are being threatened that there is a system, Deep State, that will steal your votes when you cast your ballots,” said Dr. Ruto.

He said that this is not the first time threats have been issued.

Dr Ruto was speaking at his Karen residence during a meeting with leaders from Kajiado County led by Kajiado South MP Katoo Ole Metito and Senator Mary Senata.

Citing the 2013 General Election when he joined hands with President Uhuru Kenyatta to form Jubilee Party which won the presidential election, Ruto said they were threatened with veiled threats their choice to run will have consequences.

“If I was a coward, I would not have supported President Kenyatta in 2013 because some people told me not to work with him,” he said.

The phrases ‘choices have consequences’ were uttered by former US Ambassador to Kenya Johnny Carson when President Kenyatta and Ruto announced their intention to vie for the presidential seat while awaiting the hearing and determination of their cases at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

In an interview with Punchline on December 8, 2019, Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi referred to the “Deep State.”

In his own words, the ANC leader said that he was afraid of the group in 2002.

“When you are talking of the Deep State and the kind of things that they send to you to say this cannot work or we will ensure that you won’t get anywhere…The Deep State always exists,” said Mudavadi in the interview with Anne Kiguta.
