A road signboard named after Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has been repainted after it was burnt hours ago.

The signboard, which was burnt by unknown people, has been a source of controversy on social media with a section of Kenyans saying the veteran unionist does not deserve a road named after him.

Hours after the incident, Atwoli took to social media saying those behind the vandalism will be haunted forever.

“Bringing down honorary road signage under my name doesn’t hurt me. On the flip side, it will haunt for life, those who are behind it. For how does it benefit them? How do you sleep at night know you are a vandal?” he posed.

The burning of the signboard comes two weeks after unknown men pulled it down just a few days after it was launched.

Atwoli, while reacting to its removal for the first time, condemned the incident and asked security agencies to investigate the matter.

He later said the signage had been installed and added that a CCTV camera was also put in place to monitor those who will want to bring it down again.

Atwoli is said to have hired a group of youths to take care of the signage from another destruction.

The allegation emerged after activist Boniface Mwangi said a group of youths, who had camped close to the signage, blocked him from demolishing it.

Mwangi had promised to bring it down.

The road formerly known as DikDik Road was renamed Francis Atwoli road on Thursday, May 27.

It was unveiled in the presence of Nairobi Deputy Governor Ann Kananu and other leaders.
