President Uhuru Kenyatta has delivered part of his Jamhuri Day promise where he pledged to reduce the cost of electricity by 30 per cent.

In a Friday, January 8 statement, the Ministry of Energy confirmed that the cost of electricity has been reduced by 15 per cent.

The ministry further stated that the reduction of the cost of electricity took effect on January 1 and will run throughout the year.

Through a gazette notice, the Ministry of Energy said it hoped the lives of households will improve adding that the reduction will spur economic growth.

“The Ministry of energy hereby confirms that the Kenya Gazette of January 7, has effected a 15 per cent reduction in power tariffs. The reduction will boost livelihoods and economic growth by reducing the cost of living,” the gazette notice read in part.

The Ministry of Energy further stated that it will effect the remaining 15 per cent reduction before March in fulfilment of President Uhuru’s promise.

“We are working hard at ensuring the next 15 per cent trance is effected in this quarter as promised, The ministry will make sure that this improves our global competitiveness, drives job creation and powers economic growth,” the notice further read.
