Kenya records 3,211 cervical cancer deaths annually – PS Mary Muthoni

Public Health Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni now says Kenya loses 9 women daily to cervical cancer. 

Speaking on Thursday, January 30, 2025, the PS noted that cervical cancer has become the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. 

She also disclosed that the deadly disease has become the second most prevalent cancer overall. 

In particular, the PS stated that Kenya records 5,226 new cases and 3,211 deaths for cervical cancer annually.

“This country records about 5,226 new cases and 3,211 deaths for cervical cancer annually. Cervical cancer in particular is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women and second most prevalent cancer overall,” she said.

The PS further expressed the ministry’s intention to ensure that 90 per cent of young girls from 14 year and below are vaccinated. 

She highlighted the importance of the exercise saying it will help reduce the cases in the country. 

While championing for the exercise, the PS reminisced how she lost a close loved one due to lat screening and vaccination.
