The Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, has approved a murder charge for a policeman accused of fatally assaulting a civilian in Kisii County.
On Thursday, December 31, Bonface Maubi will be charged with murdering Bramwel Jimmy Chakunza, 28.
Chakunza’s killing led to street demonstrations in Kisii town, an incident that drew the attention of Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr Fred Matiang’i, who ordered officers to investigate the matter.
The civilian’s death occurred after he was allegedly assaulted while in custody at the Kisii Police Station following his arrest alongside his friend, Wycliffe Omondi Okoko, on December 19.
The man died at the Nyanchwa Mission Hospital where he was admitted after he was freed from the police station.
An investigation carried out by detectives from the Internal Affairs Unit Headquarters led to the fingering of Maubi as the person of interest in the case.
