Nairobi motorists have been advised to expect temporary traffic disruptions on Friday, August 22, 2025, as thousands of Harambee Stars fans head to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, for the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) clash between Kenya and Madagascar.

The National Police Service (NPS) in a statement on Friday, August 22, 2025, announced that a series of diversions and road closures have been effected across major routes around the city, particularly the Thika Superhighway and its access points.

“Due to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), the National Police Service wishes to inform the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi on Friday, 22 August 2025, as follows,” the police statement read in parts.

Thika Superhighway diversions

According to NPS, motorists from Nairobi CBD heading towards Ruiru, Juja, and Thika have been redirected to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, with a roadblock mounted at Muthaiga.

Vehicles using the Thika Superhighway towards Mwiki have been diverted to the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route.

Those from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading to the CBD have been guided to use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, following the roadblock set up at the Ruiru Interchange.

Motorists from Githurai heading to the CBD have also been diverted to use the Githurai 44–Kiambu Road route.

For fans heading to Kasarani Stadium, only vehicles with access passes have been allowed through; others have been directed to use the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.

Police assure safety and order

NPS emphasised that additional police officers have already been deployed along the affected routes and around the stadium to manage traffic and ensure safety.

“The National Police Service continues to work collaboratively with relevant agencies and urges all motorists to cooperate with officers on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules,” the statement added.

A spot check by K24 Digital has shown that police have already enforced the traffic advisory for Nairobi motorists.

The Harambee Stars vs Madagascar match kicks off at 5 pm at Kasarani Stadium.
