PHOTOS: Ruto arrives in Addis Ababa for UN summit

President William Ruto has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake, where world leaders are convening to review progress on food system reforms.

In a statement shared on State House Kenya’s official X account on July 27, 2025, Ruto announced that he arrived in Ethiopia on Sunday evening and was welcomed at Bole International Airport by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh.

“President William Ruto arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Sunday evening to attend the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake. The President was received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh,” the statement reads.

Ruto’s itinerary

While in Addis Ababa, Ruto is scheduled to deliver Kenya’s national statement, reaffirming the country’s commitment to transforming food systems.

“At the summit, he will deliver Kenya’s national statement, reaffirming the country’s commitment to transforming food systems to support sustainable development and enhance climate resilience,” the statement adds.

Ruto will also hold bilateral talks with several global leaders during the summit.

He is expected to hold talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, likely focusing on strengthening cooperation between the two East African neighbours on various issues.

Additionally, he will engage with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the newly elected Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

“On the sidelines of the Summit, the President will hold bilateral talks with other leaders, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, among others,” the statement concludes.

UN Food Systems Summit

The Second UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) is taking place from July 27–29, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is being co-hosted by Ethiopia and Italy.

According to the UN, the summit will serve as a global platform for countries to reflect on progress, strengthen collaboration, and unlock financing and investments to accelerate food systems transformation.
