Ndegwa Njiru slams Ruto over chaos witnessed on Gachagua procession

By , August 21, 2025

Outspoken advocate and human rights activist Ndegwa Njiru has lashed out at President William Ruto, accusing him of using state machinery to frustrate former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political resurgence.

In a statement on his X account on Thursday, August 21, 2025, after Gachagua’s convoy was teargassed along Mombasa Road, Njiru criticised the heavy-handed police response and questioned the government’s growing intolerance toward dissent.

“Kasongo is so scared. Hataki hadi Riggy G arundi kwake home? They have tear-gassed our convoy along Mombasa Road,” the statement read.

Njiru claimed the convoy was peaceful and had followed protocol, but was still met with teargas and roadblocks.

Gachaguas’ return

Goons stoned the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) party leader, Rigathi Gachagua’s convoy on Airport Road North along Mombasa Road.

The convoy led by Gachagua was peaceful from the moment they left Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where he received a warm welcome after a 43-day US diaspora tour on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Gachagua’s supporters retaliated to the attack by the goons, comprising young men armed with weapons and stones that had been waiting at the roundabout.

As a result, police have lobbed tear gas to disperse the crowds as others run to safety.

In a press conference on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, interim DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala stated that the supporters will make a peaceful procession from the country’s main airport into the Nairobi Central Business District, where Gachagua will address the public.

“Once our party leader touches down, we shall have a peaceful procession into the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to address our supporters and the people of Kenya at various stopovers,” Malala said.

“We have advised the National Police Service through various OCSs accordingly and given a copy of the advisory to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).”

“To IPOA, you are aware that the opposition has been a major victim of police brutality across the country, with no action from your end. If it is forgotten, I invite you to recall instances of police brutality and assassination attempts on Rigathi Gachagua and his allies.” Malalah added.
