Murang’a senator Joe Nyutu: Kenya might burn if Gachagua is arrested
By David Nthua, August 21, 2025Murang’a County Senator Joe Nyutu has plainly warned the government against burning Kenya by attempting to arrest the Democracy for Citizens’ Party Leader, Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking to the media at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Nyutu described Gachagua as an enigma whose influence cannot be underestimated.
Nyutu insisted that if there are issues to be addressed involving the former Deputy President, then due process should be followed without harassment.
He suggested that authorities should either summon him formally or wait for him to present himself, rather than resorting to forceful means that could destabilise the nation.
“Huawezi kulazimisha mtu kuandikisha taarifa. Iwapo kuna taarifa wanataka kwa Rigathi Gachagua, basi wamngoje, wanajua kwake nyumbani ama kama kuna taarifa yoyote wanataka, wamwambia ajifikishe mahali fulani.

“Na ni kama Rigathi mwenyewe anataka maanake hawezi kulazimishwa.”
Nyutu went further to challenge the basis of any possible arrest, questioning whether Gachagua had revealed anything unknown to the public.
“Ni nini amesema haijulikani? Kwamba serikali iko na uhusiano na wale terrorists? Ni nini serikali haijui?
“Hakuna mtu hajiui ya kwamba Rais mwenyewe alienda pale Mandera na akasema ya kwamba machifu walikua wameshikwa wataachiliwa na wakaachiliwa baadaye.”

The senator cautioned that trying to detain Gachagua would not only be politically provocative but could also destabilise the peace and unity the country is striving to maintain.
“Lakini kumtia baroni uko ni kuchoma Kenya. Kwa hivyo tunataka kuwaambia wasijaribu kumtia baroni Rigathi Gachagua.”
Nyutu’s remarks come amid heightened tension following reports that security agencies have been placed on alert ahead of Gachagua’s highly anticipated return from the United States.
His supporters, under the Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP), have already mobilised thousands of people to give him a heroic welcome at JKIA and later at Kamukunji Grounds.
Analysts argue that Nyutu’s warning reflects the growing unease among leaders from Mt Kenya who fear that any mishandling of the Gachagua issue could trigger nationwide protests, mirroring last year’s Gen Z demonstrations.
