SportPesa Foundation has stepped up its efforts to promote safe deliveries by supporting Mukuru community’s Ruben Centre with various equipment for its maternity wing.

This will help the non-profit based facility serve more patients and encourage the women in the surrounding communities to give birth in hospitals and not at home.

The equipment donated included oxygen cylinders, an ultrasound machine, BP manual monitors, foetal Dopplers, Oxygen Concentrators, baby weighing scales, drip stands and maternity packs among others.

Speaking during the visit to the Ruben Centre, SportPesa Foundation Lead Esther Matere said the support builds on sustaining the centre which is run by well-wishers and depends entirely on donations to cater for the Mukuru community, especially young mothers and children born with disabilities.

“We believe that this support will encourage more women from the surrounding Mukuru area to opt for safe delivery in hospitals as opposed to giving birth at home,” said Ms Matere.

The centre is also a rehabilitation and physiotherapy centre for children born with disabilities. It was started by Christian Brothers, an international Community-Based Organisation and currently runs on donations from many other NGOs.

“We handle an average of 250 patients per day and more than 100 deliveries per month and rely solely on donations to ensure safe birthing process for mothers. This donation will go a long way in ensuring the mothers who come into this clinic access the best services thanks to availability of proper equipment,” said Zipporah Mwangi who is in charge of the Ruben Centre.

SportPesa Foundation launched its maternal health support six months ago in Bomet County. To date it has made donations to Rironi Health Centre in Limuru, Lunga Lunga Health and Riruta Health Centres in Nairobi, Mikinduri sub-County Hospital and Ankamia Dispensary both in Meru and Ndarawetha Dispensary in Bomet.
