MP Salasya reveals reason he posted live parliament proceedings

By , February 12, 2025

Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has disclosed the reason why he posted a video of parliament live proceedings on his social media account.

Speaking during a live interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Salasya refuted claims of live streaming the session on his socials, noting that he posted a video of himself capturing a section of the proceeding because he was idle after the speaker denied him a chance to contribute to the motion.

He went on to explain that during the Tuesday, February 11, 2025, parliament proceedings he raised his hand so that he could contribute to the motion but the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula declined to give him a chance.

Mimi nilibeba mkono, mkono yangu nilibeba for one full hour Spika hanipati nafasi, sasa mtoto kama ako idle si anaanza kuchezacheza huko, unataka afanye nini? Hizo vitu wanasema kulive stream ilikuwa video na kuchukua selfie kidogo,(I raised my hand. I held out my hand for one full hour, but he didn’t give me (the Speaker) a chance. Now, if a child is idle, won’t they start playing around? What do you expect them to do? The things they are talking about live streaming, was just a video and taking a few selfies),” Salasya explained.

Salasya on mistreatment in parliament

He further complained of mistreatment and being belittled while in parliament since he is a first-timer, he added that veteran politicians are being prioritized.

Mimi kama mbunge nlikuwa elected na wanainchi wa Kenya, tuliangusha wale ambao walikuwa veteran tukangusha wale ambao walikuwa season politicians, lakini kuja kwa bunge spika anakurefer kama young man anakudhalilisha ati wewe you are a first timer (As a Member of Parliament, I was elected by the people of Kenya. We defeated the veterans and the seasoned politicians. However, upon coming to Parliament, the Speaker refers to you as a “young man” and belittles you, saying you are a first-timer),” he complained.

He further urged the speaker to treat all parliamentarians equally regardless of their experience as an MP.

Sasa kitu tunasema spika lazima aheshimu wabunge kwa sababu sisi ndio bosses wake leo nikiamua kuleta impeachment katika bunge ataenda nyumbani, that is why he must treat us all equal hatuwezi kuendelea kudharauliwa sisi kama first-time MPs,(What we are saying is that the Speaker must respect Members of Parliament because we are his bosses. If I decide to bring an impeachment motion in Parliament, he will go home. That is why he must treat us all equally. We, as first-time MPs, cannot continue being disrespected,)” he stated

Salasya’s video

Taking to his social media account, the youthful parliamentarian posted a video of himself in parliament while attending the proceedings saying he is sitting in the corner and his job is to shout.

Hapa mambo imechemka na sitaki mchezo. Nimekaa kwa corner, kazi yangu ni kutoa sauti hapa, hata hakuna speaker anaweza ona. Nimekaa hapa kwa corner, kazi yangu ni kupiga kelele,” he is heard saying.

However, the video got the attention of the speaker who ordered him to pull down the video.

“My dear young man, if you are not honourable, Parliament can easily place locks on your phone and verify exactly what you were doing. If you acknowledge the act, the Speaker will take remedial measures. But if you deny it, this matter could land you before the Powers and Privileges Committee, where unintended consequences await,” he warned.
