Motorists warned as Southern Bypass to shut down from Saturday midnight
By Steve Ireri, October 25, 2025The National Police Service (NPS) has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi ahead of the 2025 Standard Chartered Marathon, which is set to take place this weekend.

In a statement released on Saturday, October 25, 2025, NPS revealed that the Nairobi Southern Bypass will be closed to traffic from midnight until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2025, to ensure public safety and smooth coordination of the annual marathon.
“NOTICE OF TEMPORARY TRAFFIC DISRUPTION IN NAIROBI To ensure public safety and the smooth management of the 2025 Standard Chartered Marathon, the National Police Service notifies the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi,” the NPS statement read in part.
According to the police, the temporary closure will affect the section of the Southern Bypass stretching from the Ole Sereni Interchange to Kikuyu Town.
The service noted that the decision is aimed at facilitating the event and protecting both participants and road users during the marathon hours.
The police further directed motorists to use alternative routes during the disruption period.
Drivers heading from Mombasa Road towards Kikuyu will be diverted via Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way, while those travelling from Dagoretti South to Kikuyu have been advised to use Dagoretti Road.
For movement between Lang’ata and Dagoretti South, motorists are encouraged to use Lang’ata Road through Karen.
“Motorists travelling from Dagoretti South to Kikuyu are advised to use Dagoretti Road. •For travel between Lang’ata and Dagoretti South, use Lang’ata Road through Karen,” the statement read in part.
NPS noted that it is working closely with other government agencies and event organisers to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimal inconvenience to road users during the marathon.
“The National Police Service is working collaboratively with relevant agencies to ensure a smooth traffic flow and a successful event,” NPS added.
The police urged all motorists to exercise patience, obey traffic rules, and follow instructions from officers who will be deployed along the affected routes to guide the public.
They also cautioned that stern action will be taken against any motorist found violating traffic regulations or disobeying diversion directives during the temporary closure.
“All motorists are urged to be patient, strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations, and follow the guidance of officers stationed along the affected routes. Stern action will be taken against anyone found violating traffic rules,” the statement concluded.
