Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has successfully conducted 16 Duhamel pull-through surgeries under the Pediatric Pull-Through Surgery Project, bringing renewed hope to children suffering from Hirschsprung’s disease.

In a statement on Friday, November 21, 2025, MTRH revealed that the procedures were carried out between November 3 and 7, 2025, at the Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital.

The initiative targeted children diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s disease, a rare congenital condition that affects the large intestine and interferes with normal bowel movement. The condition often requires specialised surgical intervention.

Further, the facility disclosed that the surgical mission was led by Dr Peter Saula, a consultant paediatric surgeon at MTRH, who worked alongside a multidisciplinary team comprising anaesthetists, theatre nurses, paediatric specialists, and postoperative care professionals.

Speaking after the completion of the final surgery, Dr. Saula underscored the importance of the project in expanding access to advanced paediatric surgical care in the region.

“This program has given sixteen children a chance at healthier, pain-free lives. The success of these surgeries reflects the strength of our team and MTRH’s commitment to improving specialised child health services,” he said.

Successfully discharged

MTRH Chief Executive Officer, Dr Philip Kirwa, noted that the week-long surgical campaign is part of the hospital’s broader agenda to increase the availability of complex paediatric surgeries within Kenya, minimising the need for patients to seek treatment outside the region.

All 16 children who underwent the procedures have since been discharged and are recovering well at home.

This comes a few weeks after the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH)  celebrated a historic medical breakthrough after successfully performing what is believed to be the world’s largest breast reduction surgery.

Through a press statement shared on Facebook on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the facility stated that its team of specialists had removed 20.86 kilograms of breast tissue from a teenage girl suffering from a rare medical condition known as gigantomastia.

According to KNH, the 11-hour operation marked a major step forward for Kenya’s medical field, showcasing the hospital’s growing ability to handle complex, world-class procedures locally.

“A team of dedicated surgeons and medical staff at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has given a 17-year-old girl the gift of a normal life.

“In a landmark procedure believed to be the largest of its kind in the world, the team successfully removed 20.86 kilograms of breast tissue from a teenager who suffered from a severe and rare condition known as gigantomastia,” the KNH statement reads in part.
