MoH to kick off measles vaccination in 22 high-risk counties

Ministry of Health is set to launch a Measles and Rubella vaccination campaign aiming to reach approximately 3.5 million children of ages 9 – 59 Months.

This comes in the wake of a risk assessment report that identified 22 counties as being at very high risk for measles outbreaks.

In a report, Ag. Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth stated that the assessment was done with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO)

Among the counties mentioned included; Kilifi, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Tana River, TransNzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Busia, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Kajiado, Nairobi, Bomet, Bungoma, Kakamega, Narok and Vihiga.

MoH says that this will be driven by over 16,000 health workers who will facilitate the process in 5,061 vaccination posts set in public places including markets, Schools, Churches, Mosques, and other social places & mobile vaccination teams.

The ministry will hold an official launch ceremony in Kajiado County on Friday, June 25.

Health CAS Dr. Mercy Mwangangi has now appealed to parents and caregivers to enroll their children in this crucial process.

” I appeal to all parents and caregivers with children ages 9 months to 59 months to take them for immunisation,” Dr. Mercy Mwangangi stated.

She further lauded the government together with other partners in the Health ministry for the support and goodwill.

“I appreciate the support offered to the Ministry of Health by other Government Departments, Gavi, UNICEF, WHO, CHAI, ICAP among other partners, leaders including the media. Your support has been instrumental in the planning of this important health activity,” Dr. Mwangangi said in conclusion.
