Maraga mourns late MP Catherine Nyamato
By Faith Lagat, July 17, 2025Former Chief Justice David Maraga has mourned the passing of Catherine Moraa Nyamato, describing her as a trailblazer in Kenya’s political and social justice spaces.
Taking to X on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Maraga shared a heartfelt tribute to the former nominated MP, whose death was confirmed earlier in the day by Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka.
Nyamato, who served in Parliament from 1997 to 2002, is being remembered for championing women’s rights, the empowerment of marginalised groups, and shaping Kenya’s civic landscape during a pivotal era.
“It is with a heavy heart and deepest sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences on the demise of Hon. Catherine Moraa Nyamato, MP,” Maraga wrote. “She was a distinguished daughter of Gusii and a trailblazer whose contributions to our nation’s political landscape and advocacy for women’s empowerment will forever remain etched in our memories.”
According to Maraga, Nyamato used her tenure in Parliament to amplify the voices of women, girls, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups. She actively pushed for girls’ education and fought for increased women’s representation in leadership.
Beyond her parliamentary role, Nyamato played a significant part in the Bomas constitution-making process and served as the Secretary-General of the Kenya Women Political Caucus. In that role, she mentored many women who have since risen to leadership positions both locally and internationally.
“She was instrumental in the establishment of civic forums for women’s political participation and played a key role in the women’s movement, especially during the Bomas constitutional process,” Maraga noted.

He added, “I will never forget her dignity and valour. She stood for the rule of law and the protection of the marginalised. May her courage continue to inspire us all to uphold justice with dignity and purpose.”
As news of Nyamato’s passing spreads, Kenyans from all walks of life are paying tribute to her legacy. Details regarding Nyamato’s funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
