Malala: Gachagua is DCP presidential flagbearer in 2027

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) delegates from Kiambu County have endorsed Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua as the presidential flagbearer.
The team, led by the Deputy Party Leader Cleopas Malala, announced that DCP would have candidates in all the elective positions across the country during the 2027 general elections.

Malala, who addressed the delegates at Destiny Gardens in Ruiru sub-county on Thursday, September 25, 2025, said numbers will determine who becomes the United Opposition presidential candidate.
At the same time, Malala took a swipe at the relaunching of the Jubilee Party, terming it as a calculated move to dim DCP’s supremacy in the Mountain region.
“Our party leader, Gachagua, is our torchbearer in the forthcoming presidential elections. We cannot gamble about that, Malala told the cheering DCP delegates, among them gubernatorial, parliamentary, and county assembly aspirants.

He also used the occasion to criticise the Jubilee Party unveiling event, claiming it was a plot by President William Ruto to undermine DCP’s supremacy in the Central Kenya region.
“This is just another red-coloured wheelbarrow that is aimed at dimming DCP and Gachagua’s popularity here. We know the MPs associated with the party are the ones who were used to impeach our leader,” charged the official.
He further added, “Engaging such an outfit is like a young man getting into a friendship with a girl who holds a knife at his back. We should treat these people as our opponents, not partners.”

Gachagua warns Ruto
Malala’s remarks closely follow Gachagua’s declaration that he will not allow President William Ruto to divide the Mount Kenya community’s political voice, insisting that unity in the region must be protected at all costs.
Speaking to the press in Muranga on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Gachagua said Ruto was plotting to weaken the united opposition by using divide-and-rule tactics.
“Na mimi naita viongozi ndio niseme, William Ruto anapanga kugawanya hii jamii yetu wa mlima ndio atukalie. Na nimekataza na sitamkubalia. Na mimi najua anatengeneza ma wheelbarrow, mingi sana.”
Tunajua amepanga atume watu wake wagawanye united opposition. Hatutakubalia yeye. Kwa sababu tukugawayika, atatuweza,” he said.
Gachagua’s remarks highlight growing political tensions between him and the President, once seen as close allies.
Worth noting, the Mt. Kenya region has historically held significant sway in national politics due to its large voting bloc. Leaders from the area have often jostled to be recognised as the political spokesperson for the community, a position that grants influence both locally and nationally.
Meanwhile, Gachagua, who served as Deputy President from 2022 to 2024, has increasingly cast himself as the custodian of that unity.
