Larry Madowo questions why only MP Orero’s driver was punished after viral road incident

By , October 13, 2025

CNN international correspondent Larry Madowo has spoken out following the sentencing of Kibra Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Orero’s driver, George Oduor, questioning whether the legislator himself will face any action over the viral road confrontation that took place earlier this month.

Taking to social media on Monday, October 13, 2025, shortly after Oduor was fined Ksh100,000 for dangerous overtaking, Madowo questioned the fairness of the outcome, suggesting that the driver may have acted under the MP’s watch.

He pointed out that during their viral altercation, it was the MP, not his driver, who directly confronted him.

“The Kibra MP’s driver, George Oduor fined Ksh100,000 after pleading guilty to obstruction and dangerous overtaking. Did he do that without permission from his boss, Peter Orero, who was next to him? The MP was the first to dare me to take it to Ruto, not the driver,” Madowo wrote.

Madowo’s comments came just hours after the Milimani Law Courts sentenced Oduor to a fine of Ksh100,000 or, in default, one year in prison after he pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous overtaking and obstruction.

The video that triggered the saga showed a Toyota Prado, registration number KBN 546S, linked to the MP, dangerously overtaking a line of vehicles along Oloitoktok Road in Nairobi before stopping abruptly and obstructing traffic.

Madowo, who was recording the incident, confronted the driver and the MP, demanding accountability for the reckless driving.

The confrontation quickly went viral on social media, sparking national debate about road discipline and abuse of power by public officials.

Madowo maintained that he was filming the incident to document what he described as blatant disregard for traffic rules by individuals connected to influential figures.

After the video circulated widely, police said they had reviewed the footage and would summon the driver for questioning.

On Monday, October 13, 2025, the matter culminated in Oduor’s arraignment at the Milimani Law Courts, where he was charged under Rule 73 (4) as read with Rule 99 of the Traffic Rules, CAP 403 of the Laws of Kenya.

Oduor pleaded guilty, telling Principal Magistrate Rose Ndombi that he was rushing to the airport and had no intention of endangering other motorists.

“I was rushing to the airport and noticed there was traffic. As I was trying to overtake, I met another vehicle. I ask the court to forgive me since it is my first offence,” he said.

The court, however, found his explanation insufficient to excuse his conduct and sentenced him to either pay a fine of Ksh100,000 or serve one year in prison.

“You will pay a fine of Ksh100,000 or serve twelve months in prison. You have fourteen days to appeal,” Magistrate Ndombi ruled.

As of press time, MP Peter Orero had not issued any public statement addressing either the court’s ruling or Madowo’s renewed questions about his role in the incident.

Police have also not indicated whether further investigations will extend to the legislator himself.
