Kyalo Mbobu murder: 4 tragic deaths that shook Kenya’s legal fraternity

Kenya’s legal fraternity has in recent years been shaken by the untimely deaths of prominent lawyers, highlighting the risks faced by those who uphold justice. From targeted attacks to abductions, these incidents reflect a troubling trend of violence against legal practitioners in the country.

Kyalo Mbobu – shot in Nairobi

The legal community mourned the brutal killing of Advocate Kyalo Mbobu, who was shot dead in Nairobi on the evening of September 9, 2025. According to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Mbobu, an Advocate of the High Court with over 30 years of practice, was fatally shot in a drive-by attack by unknown assailants on a motorcycle.

“This most unfortunate occurrence marks a sad day for the legal profession and for the entire country. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mbobu,” said LSK President Faith Odhiambo.

Mbobu also served as Chairman of the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal and lectured at the University of Nairobi, leaving behind a legacy of legal excellence.

Anthony Gathitu Kabathi – bandit ambush while travelling

Anthony Gathitu Kabathi, another High Court Advocate, was ambushed by suspected bandits while returning to Nairobi from a client meeting in Wajir in January 2024.

The attack occurred near Laga Logo, about five kilometres from a police camp on Isiolo-Modogashe Road. Kabathi was shot and admitted to the hospital in serious condition, but he succumbed to his injuries later that night.

Willie Kimani – abducted after court appearance

Human rights lawyer Willie Kimani was abducted and killed in 2016, alongside his client Josephat Mwendwa and their driver Joseph Muiruri. The three were murdered shortly after filing a police brutality complaint.

In 2023, a Kenyan court handed long prison sentences to a former police officer, two serving officers, and a civilian informant for their involvement in the killings.

Kimani, who worked for the International Justice Mission, was remembered for his dedication to investigating and documenting human rights abuses.

Robert Chesang – shot in his home

Advocate Robert Chesang was tragically shot dead in his Lukenya home in February 2019.

Details of the attack remain scarce, but his death sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity.

Chesang was widely respected for his contributions to legal practice and his unwavering commitment to justice.
