A 53-year-old nurse at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has been arraigned in court after he was caught using a patient in a coma to steal medicine at the hospital for three months.

Joseph Onyango Joel Migundo appeared before Milimani Law Courts where he was charged for committing the crime on diverse dates between October 2, 2021, and December 9, 2021, at the hospital.

Within this period, Migundo allegedly stole 12 bottles of Human Albumin Solution all valued at Ksh 81,600.

The nurse is also facing an alternative charge of handling stolen property.

He is said to have been found in possession of four bottles of the said drugs on December 9, 2021, during an ambush that was laid down by the hospital’s staff.

Court documents seen by K24 Digital say that security personnel at KNH had received intelligence from an insider that the nurse was stealing drugs from the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

This made the officer lay a deliberate ambush where they established that the accused was adding a specific drug to a prescription of a patient who is in a coma at the hospital.

“When the medicines are dispatched from the pharmacy the accused stole them since they were not prescribed to the patient as per the treatment sheet,” read part of the police report.

Joseph has, however, pleaded not guilty before Nairobi Senior Principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi and was released on a cash bail of Ksh50,000.
