Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Atellah has commended former Cabinet Secretary and immediate former Senior Economic Advisor to the president, Moses Kuria, for his candid remarks on the ongoing doctors’ strike in Kiambu County.

Through his X account on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Atellah said Kuria’s comments reflected rare honesty and courage that Kenya urgently needs in its leadership.

Call for dialogue and respect

“Today, Hon. Moses Kuria spoke with the kind of honesty and courage that our nation needs right now,” Atellah posted.

“He reminded us that the ongoing crisis in Kiambu is not about winning or losing, it is about restoring dignity to both doctors and the patients they serve.”

Atellah noted that doctors in Kiambu have been on strike for over four months, demanding justice, fair working conditions, and a functional healthcare system.

He said their struggle is not about personal gain but about honouring their oath to save lives.

“When a doctor’s welfare is ignored, it is the ordinary mwananchi who suffers most,” he stated.

“Hon. Moses Kuria’s words cut through the noise and politics. His call for Governor Kimani Wamatangi to sit down with the doctors and find a lasting solution is timely and wise.”

The KMPDU boss added that Kuria’s intervention highlights a truth many leaders overlook that healthcare is not a political contest but a shared national duty.

Elsewhere, Kiambu MCAs have accused KMPDU of political manipulation amid a healthcare crisis.

Kuria’s leadership

Atellah went on to applaud Kuria’s offer to mediate between the Kiambu County Government and the striking doctors, calling it a sign of true leadership.

“Having been part of negotiations in the national strike last year, and knowing the suffering of people in Gatundu, we welcome his offer to mediate between the County Government and Kiambu doctors,” Atellah said.

“That is leadership in action, choosing dialogue over hostility, understanding over arrogance, and service over ego.”

The union leader further thanked the former CS for recognising the struggles faced by medical workers and for speaking truthfully about the state of healthcare in the county.

“@HonMoses_Kuria, thank you for standing with truth and for recognising that doctors cannot be defeated; when doctors fall, the health system falls with them,” he concluded.

The strike in Kiambu County has now entered its fifth month, paralysing services in major public hospitals.

KMPDU has urged the county government to embrace dialogue and prioritise healthcare, warning that continued inaction would only deepen the suffering of residents.
