Kenyan officer dies, others injured in Haiti mission accident – NPS confirms

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the death of a Kenyan police officer serving under the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, 31st August 2025, at around 5:00 p.m. Haitian time and 2:00 am on Monday, Kenyan time.

According to NPS, the accident took place along the Kenscoff-Petion-Ville Road in the Pelerin 9 area.

Officers were engaged in a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro vehicles when the accident happened.

Reports indicate that the mishap claimed the lives of the Kenyan officer and two civilians. Additionally, eight MSS officers sustained injuries, with three of them in critical condition.

The National Police Service has conveyed its deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the fallen officer. The service has also assured the family of its full support during this difficult period.

The NPS confirmed that the eight injured officers are currently receiving medical treatment, with those in critical condition under close supervision in the hospital. The MSS, in collaboration with the Haitian National Police, is working to ensure that the injured receive the best possible care.

In addition, arrangements are being made to facilitate the repatriation of the fallen officer’s body to Kenya. “The MSS, in collaboration with the Haitian National Police, is making swift arrangements to repatriate the officer to Kenya while ensuring the injured personnel continue to receive the best possible medical care,” the NPS statement read.

The tragic incident underscores the risks that Kenyan officers face while serving in international peacekeeping missions. It also highlights the sacrifices made by service men and women in their pursuit of peace and stability in conflict-torn regions.

The National Police Service reiterated Kenya’s commitment to the mission in Haiti, despite the tragic loss. “As a service, we remain committed to establishing lasting peace and security for the people of Haiti,” the statement concluded.

The death of the officer marks a sombre moment for Kenya’s peacekeeping efforts abroad. It comes as the Kenyan-led MSS continues to work alongside the Haitian National Police in restoring stability to the Caribbean nation, which has faced years of unrest and insecurity.
