Karua: Mt Kenya has never had a single political kingpin

By , August 4, 2025

Martha Karua, the People’s Liberation Party Leader, has commented on the ongoing debate around the Mt Kenya region kingpin debate.

Speaking to Kameme TV on Monday, August 4, 2025, Martha Karua said it is people who will choose who leads them, not a few powerful voices.

She dismissed claims that a single figure can rise and dictate political direction in the region.

Karua said Mt Kenya has never followed one person blindly.

“People are the ones who will choose who will be the Mt Kenya kingpin,” she said.

She added that the idea of a regional kingpin is often pushed by people seeking power for themselves.

“We have never had one person giving any political direction,” she added.

Karua used the example of former President Uhuru Kenyatta to explain her point.

“If there was, then Uhuru Kenyatta would have done so long ago,” she said.

She warned against treating Mt Kenya voters as a block that can be commanded.

Power comes from public trust

Karua said leaders must stop pretending to speak for the entire region.

“Let us stop saying that a certain person will issue any direction regarding the Mt Kenya region’s future,” she said.

She insisted that the right approach is listening to voters, not speaking for them.

“We will talk to people, and people will give us directions of what they want,” she said.

She said voters will always come together around someone who earns their trust.

“The Mt Kenya region has never had one single candidate alone,” she said.

“What happens is, finally, people coalesce around one individual.”

Karua said she and her team will work hard to earn that trust.

She promised to push for unity and avoid vote-splitting.

“We will work hard to ensure that the Mt Kenya votes will not be divided,” she said.

Karua ended by saying no leader should impose themselves as kingpin, but instead should serve with humility and honesty.
