Tragic crash details
The accident occurred on Sunday morning, September 28, 2025, when a 14-seater matatu collided head-on with a trailer.
Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio confirmed the fatalities and said several passengers were also injured.
Eyewitnesses described the collision as terrifying, noting that the matatu was badly crushed while the trailer overturned, scattering cargo and personal belongings across the highway.
The Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, part of the busy Northern Corridor, is notorious for high accident rates at black spots such as Kimende, Kinungi, and Gilgil. Poor road design, speeding, and heavy traffic have contributed to repeated tragedies along the route.
Just a day earlier, on Saturday, September 27, 2025, an ambulance carrying a patient, her husband, two relatives, a nurse, and the driver lost control on the same highway near Kimende.

The crash, which occurred between Kikopey and St Mary’s Hospital, involved several vehicles, including a truck that overturned and completely blocked the busy road.
